Wilson - Day 7

I picked up 3 rolls of turf from The Garden Centre Group at Findern on Sunday 15th July. The turf truly looked in a sorry brown state and I asked the cashier, before paying for it, if in his experience, such turf is alive and will grow. He reassured me many times, refused to drop the price as he was sure the turf was great. On his assurance I bought the turf rolls at full price of £3-99 per small roll.

With great eagerness, I set to work within minutes of getting home from the garden centre.

Wilson was going to be finished today.

The weather was dry and conditions optimum for completion of my project.

First up I had to refashion a head for Wilson:
  • The head had to be made so it didn't wash out in rain or other weather
  • It had to be eco-friendly
I had just the material! Jute sacks I bought from eBay a while ago to protect my plants for frost and snow would come in handy.

I filled a jute sack with the same soil I had used to shape Wilson's shell:

This meant filling the bag, wetting it with a mist of water slowly, reshaping the sack by knocking it on the ground to remove air pockets:

Once I had enough size for the head, I then lay the sack on the ground, wet it futher with a watering can and shaped the head. This took many attempts to get the shape:

Once I achieved the head shape for Wilson, I then trimmed the excess jute material:

To anchor Wilson's head to his shell, I lifted the turf on his shell and tucked in the jute "neck"neatly and flatly. The grass roots will easily grow through the eco-friendly jute material:
